IHG colleagues frequently see Merlin and MyHR discussed together, but IHG’s current career instructions demonstrate that the systems are not interchangeable.
The clearest public example is internal recruitment.
IHG says colleagues who have MyHR access can sign in and select the Current Jobs icon to search and apply for internal positions. Colleagues who do not have MyHR access are told to use the external search-and-apply site and identify themselves as current IHG employees.
That would make little sense if every Merlin user automatically had MyHR.
Merlin Is the Broader Workplace Access Context
Public IHG documentation connects Merlin with:
- Network IDs;
- account administration;
- employee travel eligibility;
- hotel systems;
- procurement;
- support;
- operational applications.
Merlin is therefore best treated as part of the broad IHG workplace ecosystem.
MyHR Is More Specific to HR Workflows
IHG publicly names MyHR in connection with internal career applications.
That is strong evidence of a distinct HR-related role.
Public sources do not support treating every possible payroll or benefit function advertised by third-party Merlin sites as a universal MyHR feature for every colleague.
The safest editorial rule is to claim only what current IHG sources confirm.
Franchise Hotel Colleagues Explain the Difference
IHG states that it does not employ people working at franchised hotels. Those employees work for the independent franchise owner or management company.
At the same time, franchised-hotel employees can qualify for Network IDs and selected IHG-wide programs.
This creates a plausible situation where a hotel colleague needs Merlin for brand systems but the franchise owner’s HR system handles payroll, benefits, scheduling, or employment administration.
There is no contradiction.
Different employers can use different HR stacks while sharing IHG brand technology.
Internal Job Applicants Have Two Paths
IHG provides a useful decision tree.
You Have MyHR
Open MyHR and use Current Jobs.
You Do Not Have MyHR
Use the public IHG careers search, then indicate that you are already a current IHG employee when the application asks.
That public alternative matters because it prevents colleagues from treating missing MyHR access as a complete barrier to internal career mobility.
A Merlin Password Reset Will Not Create MyHR Entitlement
If Merlin works and MyHR does not appear, the account may simply lack that HR entitlement.
Do not assume the Network ID is broken.
The employee should identify:
- employment entity;
- property type;
- whether MyHR is used for that colleague group;
- whether the role should have the application.
The relevant HR or system administrator can then address the correct layer.
MyHR Is Also Not One Rewards
MyHR manages workplace HR functions.
One Rewards manages public hotel loyalty membership.
Merlin sits in the workplace access environment.
Three different jobs.
A colleague can interact with all three during the same week:
apply for an internal role through MyHR;
use Merlin for work;
book a discounted stay through One Rewards.
Do Not Copy HR Data Between Systems Blindly
A colleague who sees different information in MyHR, a local franchise HR system, or another employee platform should not assume that every field synchronizes automatically.
The public IHG sources do not establish one universal HR master-data model across all franchised and managed properties.
That is another consequence of IHG’s franchise-heavy structure.
Use the System That Owns the Task
Workplace application access: Merlin/Network ID context.
Internal career search with MyHR entitlement: MyHR.
Internal applicant without MyHR: external IHG careers route for current employees.
Hotel booking and loyalty: One Rewards.
Franchise-specific payroll or HR: potentially the franchise employer’s own system.
That distinction eliminates most of the “Merlin vs. MyHR” confusion.
